DENTAL FLOSS - THE BENEFITS OF FLOSSING

DENTAL FLOSS - THE BENEFITS OF FLOSSING

WHAT IS DENTAL FLOSS USED FOR?

The benefits of flossing reflect an important area of oral maintenance that goes beyond the scope of brushing. Let dig a bit deeper.

Is flossing merely a term you are familiar with or is it something you practise regularly? Let’s start from the dot. What exactly is flossing? It is a simple oral care practice that dislodges food particles stuck between your teeth.

Dental flossing is still a rare phenomenon but it is gaining significance due to an increased awareness towards health and wellness. Or should we say it's emergence is due to the declining dental health of millions. On the other hand, it is also seen that those who brush twice daily are also the ones who floss more - which in turn reflects a healthy and aware mindset.

So, why should you bother about dental floss? What are its benefits and what if you let it pass? Let us get to the basics to understand clearly.

Not all the food we chew is swallowed completely and a fair bit clings on to spaces that line our teeth and gums. These tiny particles begin to rot and it is only a matter of time before bacteria & plaque set in and a host of oral complications begin to show up. The roots of gum disease are mostly planted in this fashion. On the other hand, when you floss, these food particles are cleared out of their hiding places and the oral cavity is rendered squeaky clean. No itsy bitsy pieces of food, no rot - no problem. It's a simple solution to an imminent oral catastrophe if things are left unchecked.

It is interesting to note the contrast. On one hand, the consequences of not flossing can be severe but there isn't the right kind of awareness for it. Dental flossing is not a habitual practise like brushing. Why is that so? We humans tend to fix what's broken and it is usually too late in such cases. Blame it on BS but it comes down to the individual - whether he or she is healthily inclined or not. The traditional system of flossing is rather tedious which can also be a contributing factor. Recent developments such as the introduction of floss picks and interdental brushes have made it a lot easier to adapt, which spells good news for the oral care domain.

Here’s a more intense, yet light quote from our creative oral care department: “If you don’t floss, your oral health will go for a toss!”

HOW TO FLOSS CORRECTLY? ARE FLOSSERS BETTER THAN DENTAL FLOSS?

There are various kinds of flossers available in the market, but we recommend the easy floss picks as they help you to form the habit with relative ease. You can move on to more traditional systems once you have adapted and are regular. Please note that improper flossing can lead to gum damage so it is important to read these instructions carefully.

1. Hold the flosser firmly between your thumb and index finger

2. Slide the floss gently between teeth using gentle back and forth motion

3. Move up and down along the sides of the teeth to remove plaque and food debris up and below gum line

4. Repeat the above steps with all teeth

5. Remove and dispose off the flosser

WHEN TO FLOSS? IS IT OKAY TO USE DENTAL FLOSS EVERYDAY?

The right time to floss also determines the effectiveness. Most people floss after brushing, but it is recommended to first floss and then brush your teeth. Flossing helps to release the food particles and brushing dispenses them out of the cavity along with the rinse. It is also recommended to floss at least once a day - twice is even better provided you are doing it correctly.

The importance of flossing should never be undermined. In fact, flossing is as important as any regular health care practise. People take it easy as the consequences show up a lot later. The point is, why even get there? Simply pull out the pick and floss like a boss.
